Pond maintenance

Ponds can be maintained all year round to prevent silting up, although it’s generally done in the autumn so as not to disturb any wildlife.  Small ponds need a complete overhaul to remove debris about every 5 years or so, and a large pond will need a thorough clean every 10 years.

I clear overgrown plants in and around the pond and remove any overhanging branches.

Deep water aquatic plants such as water lilies benefit from regular division and replanting in the spring. When clearing ponds, I like to leave pond weeds resting at the side of the pond for a day or two, allowing creatures hiding in there a chance to escape.
